SJD Airport Expansion: What's Already Live and What's Coming
Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), which operates SJD, is executing a $370 million (7 billion peso) overhaul as part of its 2025–2029 Master Development Plan. The ultimate goal is to unify the airport's currently separate domestic and international facilities into a single, high-efficiency terminal. That full unification is still a few years away — but the 2026 phase of construction is the most visible yet, and some improvements are already delivering real results for travelers arriving today.

What's Live Right Now: Biometric E-Gates

New Nonstop Routes — 2025–2026
The following routes represent genuinely new or substantially expanded service added in late 2025 and 2026. Each has been independently verified against airline schedules and official airport announcements. For decades, travelers from Indianapolis faced an unavoidable connection through Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, or Houston to reach Baja. Southwest Airlines changed that with the first-ever nonstop from Indianapolis International Airport (IND) to SJD — confirmed officially by the Indianapolis Airport Authority and operating since March 5, 2026.
This is a seasonal "spring break" test route, running Saturdays only through early April 2026. The Saturday cadence is well-suited for classic 7-night trips. If demand justifies it, the playbook Southwest and other carriers have followed at similar markets suggests expanded service or a longer seasonal window in future years. For now, Indy residents and Hoosiers connecting through IND have a narrow but real window to fly nonstop — book early.
Beginning June 4, 2026, Southwest is launching daily nonstop service between Harry Reid International (LAS) and Los Cabos — closing one of the more obvious gaps in the Vegas leisure map. The two destinations share an obvious audience: entertainment-focused, high-energy travelers who also happen to love beach resorts. The flight time is under 3 hours.
This route launches alongside Southwest's new LAS nonstops to Cancún and Puerto Vallarta, part of a broader Mexico expansion from Vegas. The daily frequency — rather than the weekend-only pattern typical of new leisure routes — signals strong demand confidence from the airline.
Note: Frontier Airlines also launched a separate weekly Las Vegas–SJD service in December 2025 (see below), so Vegas travelers now have both a budget-carrier and a full-service option for reaching Cabo nonstop.
Baggage heads-up: Southwest's celebrated free checked-bag policy does not apply to its Mexico international routes, including this one. Factor in checked baggage fees when comparing total costs with other carriers — the base fare may look competitive, but bags will add to the bill.
Frontier Airlines launched this route in December 2025 as part of a broader international expansion, giving Atlanta travelers — and by extension much of the Southeast, which connects easily through ATL — a direct ultra-low-cost option to SJD. Frontier's base fares can be genuinely cheap, but the total price climbs quickly with carry-on bags, seat selection, and other add-ons. Traveling with a personal item only is where the real value lives on this carrier.
Atlanta (Hartsfield-Jackson) is the most-connected airport in the United States by passenger volume, which means this route effectively opens a reasonably priced one-stop path to Los Cabos from across the entire Southeast and parts of the East Coast.
This is arguably the most strategically significant new route to open at SJD in years — not because of the volume it adds, but because of the connectivity it unlocks. Copa Airlines' inaugural nonstop between Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City and Los Cabos was the first-ever direct connection between Baja California Sur and Central America. Copa operates PTY as the "Hub of the Americas," linking it to over 80 destinations across 32 countries. A one-stop journey from Los Cabos now reaches Bogotá, Medellín, Lima, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, and dozens of other Latin American and Caribbean destinations — all without transiting through Mexico City or a U.S. hub.
The flight operates on a Boeing 737-800, departing PTY at 9:09 AM local time and returning from SJD at 1:33 PM. The 5-hour flight time is comfortable for the distance. For expats and long-term residents of Los Cabos, this route is transformative — South America has gone from a multi-day travel ordeal to a streamlined one-stop trip. For incoming visitors, Copa's network means Los Cabos is now meaningfully accessible to markets across Latin America for the first time.
Austin's connection to Los Cabos has become one of the most competitive markets on the SJD route map. American Airlines has operated the AUS–SJD nonstop for several years; Delta Air Lines entered the market in December 2025 with its own seasonal service, adding meaningful competition and downward fare pressure for Texas travelers. With two carriers now flying the same route, Austin residents have more departure time options, more loyalty program flexibility, and — when it matters — genuine pricing competition.

Frankfurt (FRA) → Los Cabos — Condor Airlines
Condor Airlines continued its nonstop Frankfurt–SJD service for its second confirmed season in 2026, operating twice weekly (Wednesdays and Sundays) through April 2026. This is a significant connection for European travelers: Frankfurt is one of the continent's major connecting hubs, meaning a Los Cabos vacation is realistically accessible for travelers originating across Germany, Western Europe, and beyond. Madrid (MAD) → Los Cabos — Iberojet
Iberojet's seasonal Madrid–SJD service returns in summer 2026, typically operating June through September. This route serves the Spanish summer holiday market — travelers swapping the Mediterranean for the Sea of Cortez during the July–August peak — and also catches connecting passengers from across the Iberian Peninsula and parts of Latin America routing through MAD. Dubai (DXB) — A Long-Term Vision for 2030
FITURCA (the Los Cabos Tourism Trust) publicly unveiled an ambitious connectivity goal in early 2026: a direct flight between Los Cabos and Dubai International Airport (DXB) by 2030. FITURCA General Director Rodrigo Esponda framed this as part of a deliberate strategy to attract ultra-high-net-worth international travelers who currently cannot reach Cabo without complex routing through U.S. or European hubs.
The logic is sound. Dubai isn't the destination — it's the gateway. Emirates' DXB hub connects travelers from India, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Eastern Europe to the rest of the world. A Los Cabos–Dubai route would allow luxury travelers from those markets to reach Baja without requiring U.S. transit visas. This is a planning-stage aspiration, not a confirmed booking, and 2030 is the target horizon. But FITURCA making it a public priority is meaningful — the tourism board has a strong track record of delivering on connectivity targets it commits to publicly.
